Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre

If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre

The resistance that you fight physically in the gym and the resistance that you fight in life can only build strong character.

The most rewarding things you do in your life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.

Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.

For every person who doubts you, tells you that you will fail, try twice as hard to prove them wrong.

The Rankin Inlet Fitness Society is a not-for-profit organization committed to improving the fitness and recreation options available to our community. The Society was created in February 2012 to encourage active living and to support community-led fitness and recreation activities. A volunteer board of directors, elected at the annual general meeting, provides vision, strategic leadership and ensures the day-to-day stewardship of the organization. The Rankin Inlet Fitness Society is registered under the Legal Registries Department of the Government of Nunavut.

Board of Directors:

  • President: Gavin Gee
  • Vice-President: Evan Morrison
  • Secretary-Treasurer: Ford Widrig

Active in the Community

Through the years, the Society has proudly supported local community groups and organizations through a variety of financial / in-kind contributions. These include:

  • Rankin Inlet Senior Men’s Basketball
  • Laura Gauthier Memorial Volleyball Tournament
  • National Aboriginal Sport Circle
  • Rankin Inlet Canadian Army Cadets
  • Canada World Youth
  • Maani Ulujuk Illinniavik High School Athlete of the Year Award
  • Under 18 Boys Soccer Teams
  • Rankin Inlet Paintball
  • Rankin Inlet Soccer Association
  • Kivalliq Counselling & Support Services
  • Rankin Inlet Volleyball
  • ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Through the vision, leadership, and fundraising efforts of members of the Society, and with the strong support of community and local businesses, we opened the Rankin Inlet Fitness Centre on March 1, 2014. Since it first opened, membership in the fitness centre has grown to over 300 members. This clean, comfortable facility offers a variety of strength training and cardiovascular equipment to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. The Society also takes pride in being able to offer employment opportunities to local Inuit youth, who are hired to supervise the facility during operating hours.

Fundraising is an important part of the Society’s activities to help us further our goals and to keep operating the fitness centre. Fundraising activities, like radio bingos and licensed community events or dances, help generate capital and operating funds. We appreciate the support of local businesses who generously donated a front desk, filing cabinets, extra equipment, fans, a TV and cable service, water jugs for the opening of the fitness centre. Support from government agencies, corporations, local athletic associations, and the community, along with the user fees and small profits generated from our retail merchandise, help cover operating expenses. We are grateful to the community of Rankin Inlet for their continued support on all our projects and activities.
